How to Measure Your Windows

At Curtainsx, accurate measurements are essential for choosing curtains that fit your windows beautifully and complement your space. Whether you’re selecting blackout curtains, velvet drapes, or light-filtering panels, following these steps will help you measure confidently and choose the right size.

Step 1: Decide Where Your Curtains Will Hang

Before measuring, determine whether your curtains will hang from a rod or track inside the window recess or above and outside the window frame.

  • Inside the Window Recess: Creates a neat, fitted appearance. Measure the available space inside the recess.

  • Above and Outside the Frame: Creates a fuller appearance and can provide better light coverage. Measure the area you want your curtains to cover.

Step 2: Measure Width

  • Use a metal tape measure for accuracy.

  • Measure the width of your curtain rod or track, rather than just the window glass.

  • For curtains inside the recess, measure the available width carefully and check for any obstructions.

  • For curtains outside the frame, decide how far beyond the window the curtains should extend on each side to achieve your preferred look and light coverage.

Step 3: Measure Height

  • Measure from the top of the curtain rod or track to your desired curtain endpoint.

  • Choose whether your curtains should finish at the windowsill, below the sill, or close to the floor.

  • For floor-length curtains, measure to the point where you want the fabric to end, allowing for your preferred clearance or slight floor contact.

  • Double-check the measurement at more than one point if the floor or ceiling is uneven.

Step 4: Check for Obstructions

  • Look for window handles, radiators, furniture, and other features that could affect how your curtains hang.

  • Check that the curtains can open and close without catching on nearby objects.

  • Consider these details when choosing your curtain width, drop, and hanging position.

Step 5: Note Your Measurements Clearly

  • Record the width and drop for each window.

  • Label each measurement by room or window to avoid confusion.

  • Double-check all measurements before placing your order.

  • Review the product’s sizing instructions to confirm whether the listed dimensions refer to individual panels or the complete curtain set.
